What is Knock Knees?

Knock knees is a condition in deformity of knees on which knee tilt in word while the ankle remain space a part

This condition is also known as gen valgus & genu Val gum

Knock knees depends upon the Tibiofemoral angle of knee joint

The normal Tibiofemoral angle is 5degree – 7degree

If tibiofemoral angle is more then 70 degree is a condition which leads to knock knees.

Medical side of space is increased & lateral side of space between the femur and tibia is decreased.

Functional Genu valgum?

Commonly seen when person go for squatting position.

It is mainly caused due to tightness of abductor muscles

It is most commonly seen in CP child due to spasticity of muscles.

The condition is more common in girls, through boys can also develop knock knees

  How Knock Knees Related to child development?

Knock Knees are usually part of child normal growth & development

In some children knock knees is more visible but in some young children have knock knees for a period of tie and with time decrease

 Many children develop knock knees & bow legs in their early years as child grow the shape & size of bones charge.

It is common is children aged 3-6 yrs and usually gets better on its own as they grow without causing any problem

In children the gap between the ankle is more then 8cm when standing the knees together

Both or the 1 knee are painful, swollen, stiff or feel warm to touch

Children will have difficulty in walking and running

                 Symptoms

1 visible Deformity

2 Asymmetry appearance of legs

3 Limp when walking or running

4 Knee or hip pain

5 Short statures

6 difficulties in standing

7 Difficulty in cross by sitting

8 Low confidence of adduct because of bad cosmetic appearance

9 abnormal gate patterns

10 Difficulty in squatting

11 Outward rotated feet

12 Ankle remain apart while the knees are touching

13 symmetric inward angulations of knees

Diagnostic

Doctor will check the position of your legs knees and ankles to determine the severity of condition

Doctor will measure the distance between the ankle of child bones

The condition will be seen if the distance between the ankle is move, move the distance between ankle is more, more the distance between ankle more will be the problem

X- ray of both legs only if the child has difficulty in walking, running and doing daily life activities this avoids the exposing the child to unnecessary radiation

If the child is above the 7 years of age Doctors will look the following factors to determine the security of condition includes:

  • Leg Length
  • Leg symmetry
  • Walking pattern
  • Gat abnormality
  • Height and length of child legs
  • Weight or BMI

Treatment

Majority of children with knock knees get better without treatment
